The Start

There I was one afternoon contemplating life and how to go about creating ways to simplify small tasks that take up way too much of my time. I was thinking about how I want to create a future where I can spend more time with my family, learn new skills to grow my career and help other people. Like the modern-day millennial that I am, I decided to ask my friend ChatGPT for some advice… As I have been eagerly researching and reading about all the fascinating careers in Data Science, I decided to prompt: “Path to become a Data Scientist”.

The list provided started off with obtaining a degree in a quantitative field. As this was something bound to take some time, I decided to go with the second suggestion on the list in the meantime. The second suggestion was to learn programming. Now, as I have been working in the world of Supply Chain, I haven’t had much experience with IT and specifically programming. I started exploring my new programming venture. It was quite eye-opening to see how much I have missed out on! To be honest, I was (and still am) a little overwhelmed with all the information on programming and different languages such as Python, R, SQL, C and C++. Hence, I decided to start with something that is very basic for a beginner like me. There were a few books that my friend ChatGPT suggested but I was immediately intrigued by a book titled: Automate the Boring Stuff with Python. As described by the author: “This book is not designed as a reference manual; it’s a guide for beginners. This book is made for people to write throwaway code, so there’s not much time spent on style and elegance. Sophisticated programming concepts-like object orientated programming, list comprehensions, and generators-aren’t covered because of the complexity they add”. (Sweigart, 2020)

This book is also available as a training course on Udemy: Click here to access this course.
